  About the Author

  One

  Willow

It’s nearing ten o’clock and Gabriel hasn’t called me or answered my calls. Normally he’d be here by now and we’d snuggle up, mess around. Something has been weighing on his mind for the past few days and it’s starting to worry me.

It’s not like him to just ghost me. I’m sitting on my bed going over some schoolwork when Sarah mutters bye to someone and looks at me, her eyes scanning me head to toe.

  “What, Sarah?”

Throwing her hands on her hips, she whips her hair back and says, “You’re coming with me. Get up.”

  “What? Why?”

“Because you’ve been moping since the rugby match this afternoon. Don’t you get it by now? That’s how they are. They're assholes. He may be your boyfriend, but he’s still an AD. Come on, let’s go to a party and have fun.”

“Yeah and then what? You'll leave me to fend for myself. At least let me call Ragan. Or Alann.”

Sarah snorts, walks to her side of the room and sits at her vanity, putting the last touches of makeup on. “I can’t believe how you can string two guys along like that. Especially when you’ve got like, the hottest guy on campus. Gabriel Saint, I mean he’s like… the finest real estate a girl can get. Lochlan’s not that far behind, but you got the leader. He’s… golden. And Alann, he’s the star quarterback of the football team. And y’all hang out together. I don’t see how Gabriel can stand it.”

“I’m not stringing anyone. Alann is my friend.”

“You don't need them, Willow. Come on.”

  “Fine.”

“First, change. I saw you had some cute jeans. And here,” Sarah goes to her closest and grabs a halter top. “Wear this. If he’s there, he’s going to go ballistic. You’re always covered up. I saw the way he acted when you were wearing figure forming clothes.”

I’m hesitant, but then, what the hell? This is probably the only time I’ll ever wear anything like this, so I take the top and get dressed. Then she says, “Now for your face. You’re gorgeous, but you can use just a little lifting up.”

She drags me to the bathroom and tells me to just shut up and let her makeup my face. It’s what she’s “good at”. It only takes about ten minutes and when I look in the mirror, I hardly recognize myself. I have on eyeliner, mascara, and this red lip, which she applied several times telling me it’s Lipsense and makes everything look hella better. While I’ve never been one to wear makeup, I’m liking this. It brings out the blue in my eyes. And my lips look fuller. Thank God for braces my freshman year in high school because my teeth are straight and white when I smile.

  “Not bad. Thanks, Sarah.”

  “Yeah, let’s roll.”

I slide on my chucks and she rolls her eyes but shrugs her shoulders and waves me on.

A friend of hers is waiting outside in her car and her friend giv
es me a once over and snickers, but otherwise says nothing.

I call Gabriel again. Wonder if he’s going to answer this time. I shouldn’t be chasing after him like this, but he texted me all the way up to his match and then… nothing. I wonder why he’s ignoring me. And then just as the second rings sounds, it goes straight to voicemail.

He declined my call? What happened between him and his father? Is he still with his father? Was there an emergency?

  I can’t believe he’s not answering me.

Wow. I can’t believe he really isn’t going to answer me.

I text Alann and he’s at home watching a movie.

Me: Why don’t you come to this dumb party?

Alann: Wait. You’re at a party? Alone? Where’s Saint?

Me: Ignoring me. My roommate dragged me out. Says if Saint sees me, he'll flip or something.

  Alann: Flip? What you wearing?

I reach my hand back and take a selfie, then send it to him.

Alann: Yeah, whoa. Maybe you should be wearing a sweater?

That takes me by surprise. Alann isn’t much for criticism, but he’s never seen me wear something so risqué either.

  Me: Why?

Alann: That’s a lot of skin, Willow. And what’s up with your face?

What’s up with my face? Has he never seen a girl with makeup on?

Me: I’m 18. It’s cool if I show skin. It doesn’t look bad. And my face has makeup on. Duh?

Alann: No. It’s not bad at all. You look hot. And even me, being me, knows your gorgeous, and you have a great ass. If you’re wearing a shirt that shows all your assets, yeah, he might flip because everyone will want you. And to guys like Saint, who think you’re little more than property, he’ll be jealous. Angry. And he’s got a temper when he’s provoked, Will. He might react. Where’s this party at?

Even him being him? I don’t know what that means. And I’m more than his ‘property’. Meaning I’m not. I’m his girlfriend. I’m not on a leash. He’s not my master like I’m some dog. I ask Sarah where it’s at and she says the frat house.

I tell Alann and the three little texting dots are on the screen for what seems like a long time when finally

Alann: I’m on my way over there. Just hang out. Don’t engage. If you get with Gabe, text me so I know you’re okay.

Me: Okay. But he’s been ignoring me so…

I add the shrug emoji and he just tells me to sit tight.

Sarah’s friend gets us there in no time and there are a lot of people here. Maybe this might not have been the smartest idea. But either way, the three of us get out and walk in. I’m people looking, and as I turn back to Sarah and her friend, they’re nowhere to be seen.

Lovely. Stranded. Thank God, Alann is on his way. As I walk forward, it’s like everyone's eyes turn on me.

Breathe. Just breathe. A few low whistles are sent my way, but I’m able to ignore them. I just want to find Gabriel.

I’m walking through throngs of drunkenness and laughter when I lift my head, and everything stops.

My entire breath, body—it all stands still as I see Gabriel. A beer bottle pressed to his lips, and a girl, plastered all over him.

And not just flirty plastered, but like I want to lay you down and do the dirty plastered. She tries to kiss his mouth when his hand comes up and lays right over her face, pushing her away—much to my comfort until he says, “No lips, babe.”

“What? You let that dumb freshman kiss your mouth. Out in public too and you don’t push her away.” She sounds so whiney. I know I don’t sound like that.

He takes another drink and mutters, “Yeah. Dumb freshman, isn’t she? Is that a problem for you? Because I can go to the next bitch waiting for a piece of me.”

He doesn’t sound right, but the words he just said cut like a knife.

  Dumb freshman? Babe?

“Come on, Gabe. You’re soooo hot. Let’s go upstairs and have some fun.”

What is going on here? And my God, this agony begins to swell inside my chest.

I take a step back, and he must feel my gaze on him because it doesn’t take him long to see me.

Then he notices how I’m dressed. His eyes bulge and I see his nose flare and he’s livid. But he has no idea that what he just said burns me up. It makes me angry as all get out even as it makes everything inside me want to cry.

“What the fuck? What are you doing here, Willow?” He sounds drunk. And I should ask him why he’s that way because I’ve never seen him drink like this before. I’ve seen him have a beer, maybe two with the other AD’s, but he’s at a frat party. With some chick glued to him. I’ve never seen him at a party. He’s usually with me, so I don’t know how is in his natural state. Is this it?

“Apparently, what I should have been doing since the very beginning. Being a dumb freshman, right?”

The girl plastered all over him is giggling and a part of me wants to rip her off and smash in her face, but then the outraged expression marring Gabriel’s face could melt stone.

  “Willow.”

“You know what? Fuck you, Gabe.”

Then I turn around and push past people when I hear his voice yell out my name. A hand wraps around my bicep and I swing a fist when I see it’s Duncan, but it’s too late. My fist lands in his nose.

  “Let go.”

“Dammit, Willow. That hurt and don’t. Let him explain.”

“No. Now let go, before I lay your ass low.”

He lifts his hands in surrender and I race out of the house when I hear Lochlan’s voice, laughing and saying, “Hey, Little Saint. See Gabe, yet?”

“Yeah, he’s too busy fucking some bitch.”

That makes his brows rise high. He’s surprised, but really? Why is he when I’m sure he knows exactly why Gabriel is doing what he’s doing. And that’s not right. That’s not how you treat someone. My God, if he wanted to break it off, whatever it is we’re doing, he could at least have the balls to say something to my face. He said he wouldn’t let anyone hurt me and he does this?

Thankfully, I see Alann’s car come into view and I yell out for him. I feel tears burning my eyes as I race towards the passenger side.

Lochlan yells out, “Don’t do it, Willow!”

Instead, I yank Gabriel’s letterman off my shoulders and throw it towards Lochlan’s feet.

Everything else is an afterthought as I shove inside the car. “Go, Alann.”

He doesn’t hesitate and drives off.

  “What the fuck happened, Willow?”

“Not now. I… God. You were right. Ragan was right. At least I didn’t give it up to him. Right? At least I wasn’t that stupid.”

His brows crunch and he snickers. “Fucking idiot. Him. Not you, Will. I’m sorry. Want me to take you home?”

“No. I don’t want to go back to Saint Hall. Can we just… I don’t know. Maybe go hang somewhere away from here?”

“Yeah. It’ll be at my apartment though. I’m not really dressed for a hangout.”

  “I don’t care where we go. I just… God, I’m so stupid.”

“Naive. Not stupid. And I think… nevermind.”

“What? Don’t do that. I want to know.”

“Willow, did he give you an explanation?”

“He had some girl’s hand on his dick and her mouth on his neck and he didn’t defend me when she called me a dumb freshman. No, he just agreed with her and told her not on the lips… babe. God. Who freaking…? I don’t get it. How can you treat someone you’ve been intimate with like that?”

  “You just said—

“No. We haven’t gotten to the sex yet. But we’ve done other things. I mean… we know what each of us looks like naked.”

  “He’s got a strong will.”

I don’t say anything and stay quiet as tears begin streaming down my face. Alann crawls to a stop and I see we’re in front of a very nice apartment building.

  “Nice place.”

  “Yeah. Come on, Will.”

&nbs
p; He leads me up to his place and asks if I want to change when we get inside.

  “Please.”

He shuts the door behind us and disappears into what I assume is his bedroom. His apartment is all earth tones and rugged, manly furnishings. Must be for a big guy like him.

He comes out and holds out a set of clothes for me then points to the bathroom where I change and wash the crap off my face. So much for trying to look hot for Gabriel. I come out wearing a GFU football shirt and a pair of gym shorts hanging slightly off my body. Alann walks to me from an open kitchen and we both sit down on his big leather coach.

Everything I talked to him about swirls in my mind. From the car ride here to our earlier text messages. And his statement about him being him is at the forefront.

  “Alann?”

He unscrews a bottle of water and passes it to me before leaning against the back of the couch.

  “What, Willow?”

His long hair falls around his shoulders and it almost makes him look like a Scottish warrior. The sharp angles of his jaw and nose. This is the first time I’ve ever seen it down. I can’t help reaching over and twirling a chunk of it around my fingers, petting it as I lift it then let go. His eyes flicker over to me before I see him roll them.

“I’ve never seen your hair down before.”

  “Don’t like it?”

“You look like a Scottish warrior.”

That makes him jerk back with a laugh.

  “You’re such a romantic.”

“Maybe. Now. What did you mean by you being you?”

Alann doesn’t speak, but his face has a forlorn look. As if he wants to confide in me, but he also wants to keep his secrets close to the chest.

“You don’t have to tell me. I’m sorry. I just… I don’t know anymore. People have talked so much shit about me… stringing along two guys like I’m some femme fatale.

  “Two guys?”

  “Yeah. Gabriel. And you.”

His eyebrows widen and he nods before looking away, as if he sees something far in the distance.

“You can’t tell no one. I’m not ready. You understand?”
